Tunnel Design Engineer
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Tunnel Design Engineer with 5–8 years of professional experience to support the planning, design, and delivery of underground infrastructure projects across Canada for a specialist engineering consultancy. The successful candidate will play a key role in technical design, analysis, and coordination for tunnelling and underground works, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
This role is well-suited to an engineer with strong technical fundamentals in tunnelling and underground design, hands-on project experience, and familiarity with Canadian codes, standards, and construction practices.
Key Responsibilities

Perform design and analysis for tunnel and underground structures, including:

Bored and mined tunnels

Cut-and-cover tunnels
-
Shafts, caverns, and underground stations

Develop and check design deliverables such as:

Design reports
-
Drawings and specifications
-
Technical calculations and models
-

Conduct geotechnical and structural assessments related to tunnelling works, including ground support and lining systems

Apply relevant Canadian and international standards (e.g., CSA, TAC, AREMA, AASHTO, Eurocodes where applicable)

Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, civil, mechanical, and construction teams

Support constructability reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering exercises

Participate in design reviews with clients, contractors, and stakeholders

Provide technical support during procurement and construction phases, including responses to RFIs and site support as needed

Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team
Qualifications and Experience
Required
-
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (Master’s degree considered an asset)

5–8 years of relevant experience in tunnel and underground design
-
Experience working on infrastructure projects in Canada

Working knowledge of tunnelling methods (TBM, SEM/NATM, cut-and-cover)

Familiarity with geotechnical principles and ground–structure interaction

Proficiency with relevant software tools (e.g., PLAXIS, FLAC, SAP2000, MIDAS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar)

Eligibility for, or possession of, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
